Cat Care FAQs at a Canton Vet

You just made the great decision to adopt a kitten. Maybe you chose a fully-grown cat instead. Regardless, if you’re a first-time feline owner, you may have some questions. Our vets at Acres Mill Veterinary Clinic can tell you everything you need to know about caring for your new kitty friend the right way.

Q: How often does my cat need to go to the vet?

A: It depends! If they’re a kitten, they probably will be in and out of the vet a lot within the first 16 weeks or so as they receive vaccinations (more on these shortly). If they’re older, you typically only have to bring them in once a year for a checkup. Of course, if your cat is sick, injured, or exhibiting strange behavior, feel free to bring them in anytime.

Q: Do I need to get my cat vaccinated?

A: Unless your cat has already received all its vaccinations, then yes, you do. As mentioned, your kitten will get a slew of vaccines, sometimes more than one of the same kind, for the first few months of its life.

After that, your cat should only need yearly vaccines. Depending on how much time they spend outside, your veterinarian may prescribe more vaccines more often, though.

Q: My cat is displaying behavioral issues. What do I do?

A: Behavioral issues like urine spraying, scratching up furniture, and hopping on the countertops or tables can drive any cat owner mad. Your cat likely just needs some better training, but bring them to us regardless. Sometimes spaying/neutering eliminates these problems.

Q: Can I brush my own cat’s teeth?

A: Yes, you can, and you absolutely should. Your cat can get cavities, gingivitis, and the same oral conditions us humans do if we have poor hygiene. Make it a point to prioritize your cat’s oral health. Whether you brush their teeth or your Canton vet does, it has to happen.
