What to Expect from Acres Mill Veterinary Clinic in Canton

Pets Love Veterinarians

At Acres Mill Veterinary Clinic, we believe preventative pet care is an important part of keeping your beloved family pets happy and healthy. With years of combined experience and a unique one-on-one approach to patient care, our Canton veterinarian has all of the skills necessary to make sure your pet’s first visit to our clinic is comfortable and successful. Whether you have cared for pets for many years or you’re a first-time pet owner, we want to make sure your visit is simple, easy and stress-free.

What to Expect at First Pet Exam

Owning a new pet is an exciting time for every pet owner. You’ve spent time researching about your pet, preparing your home and buying plenty of new toys but the first step you should take after picking up your new pet is to visit our veterinary clinic.

While many breeders and animal shelters may include a veterinary examination, if you adopted your pet from other sources, it is always a good idea to make an appointment with our veterinarian before heading home.

Making Introductions with Our Canton Veterinarian

When you first enter our clinic, our front desk staff will have you fill out some basic paperwork and make sure you and your new pet are comfortable. From there, you will be welcomed into an examination room where we will chat about your new pet and complete some basic examination steps including:

  • Weighing your pet
  • Listening to their heart and lung function
  • Taking their temperature
  • Examining eyes, ears, nose, paws, and genitalia
  • Thoroughly examining skin and coat, teeth and mouth
  • Palpate abdomen and lymph nodes

We will also ask that you bring in a feces sample for lab testing (to rule out the presence of worms). At this time we will ask if you have any questions about feeding your new pet and address any medical issues we may find.

Additional Health Considerations

During your first vet visit, we will also discuss future health and wellness recommendations for your pet. This will include information about vaccinations, microchipping, spaying and neutering services, dental care and behavioral classes to make sure your pets are living happy and healthy lives.

We will also recommend a preventative care schedule to include annual or biannual veterinary examinations.

When Should I Take My Pet to the Vet?

Aside from your initial vet visit, there will be other times it will be important to schedule an examination with our veterinarian. Schedule an appointment if your pet is experiencing any of the following issues:

  • Vomiting or diarrhea that lasts more than 24 hours
  • Loss of appetite lasting more than 24 hours
  • Irregular urination
  • Increasing water consumption
  • Oozing eyes
  • Unexplained bleeding
